Ministry of Education (MOE) would like to refer to an article by SIV, Penang, published in THE STAR dated 14 August 2010 on the issue of – Quality teaching ends need for extra classes.
Every teacher is responsible in ensuring quality classroom teaching. However, there are some teachers who put in extra efforts helping students after school hours. They feel obliged to help top scorers to maximize their potentials during the examination. They also put in extra hours for the weak students to catch up with the lessons. Normally, these classes involve students who are going to sit for major public examinations.
180 minutes are allotted for extra-curricular activities per week. Most State Education Departments have set a specific day for extra-curricular activities for all schools in the states. Nevertheless, schools that are unable to finish their educational programs during school days are allowed to carry the activities out on Saturdays (twice a month only) as stipulated in Pekeliling Ikhtisas Bilangan 8/2005 dated 5 December 2005.
